Ash Wednesday - gone are the alleluias

One of my sons made an Alleluia banner -- a strip of paper with alleluias written all over it and decorated -- for us to hide last night. It's a concrete way to remember that Lent is different (tying in to the fact that we won't hear any alleluias in our church until the Easter vigil). We talked about the changes we're going to make for Lent to help us prepare for Holy Week and Easter, and that we remember Jesus making his journey to Jerusalem and the cross.

What a wonderful idea! I always have to forceably stop myself from saying ALLELUIA at the end of the service. Still love the site and appreciate your creativity.

Being of the Anglican tradition, we too, like you, put the "Alleluias" away for Lent and bring them back at Easter. It is quite hard, I agree, to bridle your mouth at the end of the service and not say "Alleluia" after the "Thanks be to God." One year, at our church Lenten family gathering, we actually made a large banner for the church with "Alleluia" all over it, which we put away for Lent and displayed during the Easter season. Then when Easter morning comes, one of my favourite hymns, in fact my Easter favourite of all, "Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia" and I belt it out with all my might. This is a wonderful website, and keep up the excellent work.
