Keep watch, dear Lord

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep.

Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love's sake. Amen.

From the night service of Compline, The Book of Common Prayer 1979 (ECUSA)

One of my very favorite prayers. I have it on my wall of my bedroom.
Glad I found your blog.

I am a Unitarian Universalist. A modified form of this collect is what I say each night:

Keep watch dear God with those who work or watch or weep this night. Give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, give strength to the afflicted and shield the joyous, Amen.

Does anyone know the origins of the prayer? Who wrote it? When did it enter the BCP?

The origin of the prayer is from the good Catholic Saint, Augustine of Hippo.
